Weight Management and Exercise

question-bubble.png

Is the weight hysteria in our culture valid, or is it created by groups with special interests, such as the pharmaceutical industry, researchers with vested interests, others in the diet industry? For your original post, respond to this question with your opinion. Cite scholarly literature to clearly provide support for your stance. Remember to include an APA formatted in-text citation and corresponding reference from a recent (within last 5 years) professional journal or website (NIH, CDC, etc.).

Provide your initial post, then engage at least two of your online colleagues in a discussion about his/her initial posts. Therefore, you should have at least one initial post and one response to each of two colleagues. Please note that your postings and responses must be “substantive”, which means that they are to be made AFTER you have read the assigned course material and additional self-chosen material. Your discussion board assignments are worth a significant part of your course grade, therefore, you are expected to put thought and effort into these entries.

An APA formatted in-text citation and corresponding reference from a recent (within last 5 years) professional journal or website (NIH, CDC, etc.) are required in your initial discussion post. Blogs, magazines, and newspapers are NOT considered scholarly, professional sources.

COLLAPSE

I do believe that weight hysteria in our culture is valid. Obesity has been a growing concern in our society for last few decades. Obesity contributes to many health problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke to name a few. Fast food is less expensive and easily available which fits our busy lifestyle. Pharmaceutical companies promote their product in an appealing way, they promise wonder pills that cuts the fat and make you skinny with out any effort. With constant TV advisement and exposer of that lean body, tricks your brain to fall in their trap and buy the pills. Most people who use these pills see little to no result. Without proper diet and exercise these winder pills do nothing to your weight but may harm with Sid effects. Increased physical activity is a vital element of obesity intervention (Center for Disease Control and Protection, 2018). Diet industry push on the idea of “quick fix”. Diet and exercise help but they need to teach public how to make better food choices and the importance of physical activity. This may not be the quick fix most people look for which diet industry takes advantage of, but it will help maintain the healthy weight. Weight hysteria is more common in young adults, everyone wants that lean, beautiful body shown in commercials and advertisement, this concept drives young adults to make unhealthy choices, it could be either extreme diet or low carb high protein diet, these may be quick fix but not enough to sustain the desired weight for too long. Portion control, physical activity and healthy eating habits is the answer to weight management, not wonder pills.

COLLAPSE

In my opinion the weight hysteria is somewhat valid. Based on the Centers for Disease Control, 93.3 million adults in the 2016 were considered obese (CDC, 2018).The prevalence of obesity has continually increased. Although there are a lot of educational programs and preventative measures it doesn’t seem to make a big dent in this very serious problem. Particular groups do benefit monetarily from obesity treatment plans, however I still feel like the concern is valid. For example the Mayo Clinic states, “Weight-loss drugs aren’t an easy answer to weight loss, but they can be a tool to help” (2018). The prescriptions and treatments are used as tools to help with obesity they are not cures. Another factor that isn’t considered is that fact that not only does being obese affect your physical health but also your’ financial health. The CDC stated that in 2018 medical costs of an obese person was $1,429 higher than that of a normal weight person (2018). It costs money to be obese. Either way there will be money made by big pharmaceutical companies. I think that the concern about obesity is completely valid. Companies and interest groups will make money either way. The risk of not supplying people with the education and resources necessary to end obesity poses more of a problem then the money to be made in weight-loss programs.
