theoretical perspectives

Today’s leaders address increasingly complex challenges: globalization, the emergence of team functioning and structures, and economic downturns, to name a few. These issues call for leaders who can embrace change and cultural diversity. Organizational psychology theorists and professionals look at leadership styles that are transactional (focused on work tasks and employees’ ability to perform them) and transformational (focused on changing employees’ lives and abilities, based on vision and personal charisma).

The question of what makes an individual a good leader has fueled much research and debate in organizational psychology. Are leadership skills innate, or can one learn to be a great leader through education, professional development, and perseverance? In this Assignment, you review factors related to the leadership process.

To prepare:

  • Read “Activity 8–3: Donny is My Leader.”
  • Consider the “Donny is My Leader” case from specific theoretical perspectives

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a summary of the characteristics that describe Donny’s leadership philosophy and style. What are some of Donny’s strengths and weaknesses as a leader? What are some of his strengths and weaknesses as a manager? Now, analyze the consequences of Donny’s leadership style and the effect he has on the performance of individual team members (Choc, Herb, Harvey, Harry, Larry, David, Bruce, John, and Bradley). What effects does he have on the overall performance of the team? Also include in your post how Donny’s absence affects team dynamics. If you were Donny, how you would lead the team?
