Supervision
How to Maximize Use of Supervision 1
I met with my site supervisor, Dr. Rice at Association for Community Counseling (ACC),
on 2/16/18 to review my midterm evaluation. I was a little anxious about seeing what the ratings
were. My competency ratings ranged from 3 to 5 and my categories ranged from 2 to 5 with a
few Insufficient Evidence (IE). We reviewed and discussed the competency areas as well as
each of the categories comprising the competencies. Afterwards we discussed the comments she
noted as my strengths, limitations and areas of development. Together we developed and wrote
my plan and goals for the remainder of the semester.
One section on my midterm evaluation I was surprised by is the rating of a 2 in the
collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary treatment team in the planning and implementation
of interventions category of the Intervention and Conceptualization Skills competency. It
surprised me because I reach out to the more experienced interns often about what to say or do
with certain clients. Additionally, I reach out to the other counselors at ACC about how to come
up with treatment plans for certain client’s presenting problems. In discussing it with Dr. Rice,
she wants me to reflect on my clinical practice and do some preliminary research before initially
collaborating with experienced interns and other counselors. She emphasized that I am to
continue collaborating. The example she gave me was instead of asking a basic and generic
“What should I do with a client?”, she wants to see a higher-level collaboration. Which would
sound like, “I came with trying … with a client because…, what are your thoughts?” which
shows I have reflected or done preliminary research. It made more sense as she pointed it out.
Another section on my midterm evaluation I was surprised by is the rating of 4 in the
demonstrate perceptiveness and the capacity for empathy category of Interpersonal
competencies. This is something that we have discussed during group supervision that I thought
is one of my biggest weaknesses. I am beginning to understand that I am not giving myself

enough credit in my ability to feel and understand other people’s emotions and that over time I
am grown more aware of them. We have talked about that in class and in site supervision that
my tone of voice and facial expression convey more than I think they are.
One area that I was least surprised by was having high ratings in the Personal Attributes
& Self-Understanding and Interpersonal competencies. I have always believed that I am a
self-aware individual. I have a high understanding of my impact on other people and how I am
perceived in a room socially. While my facial expressions and body language might slip
occasionally with a client, I have a high emotional intelligence and am able to pick up on the
feelings of other people. I am also a very punctual and dependable person so it did not surprise
that the showing reliability and initiative category was rated as a 5. Additionally, I always jump
at opportunities to take on clients and facilitate groups, I have well demonstrated this over the
past 7 weeks at ACC.
A second area that I was least surprised by was having a rating of 5 in the Record
Keeping competency. The training I received on site about writing case notes, treatment plans
and biopsychosocials was intensive and in depth. Most of our record keeping has specific format
criteria such as Data Assessment Plan or specific headings in which information must be placed
in. It was reassuring to see that Dr Rice noticed that I applied the training to record keeping.
Additionally, it was reinforcing knowing that my level of writing case notes, treatment plans and
biopsychosocials was a major strength.
One skill I want to improve is in the group counseling interventions category. In addition
to volunteering for additional opportunities to facilitate groups, I am now going to shadow other
counselors facilitating groups. During their group, I am going to outline the agenda of the group
into what the purpose is, how the counselor introduces it, what the activity instructions were,

client processing prompts and how it was wrapped up (see attached). I am going to compile a
group resource for when I facilitate more groups. This is an idea a classmate shared about their
site having a group activities resource book as a go to for facilitating groups. After each group, I
am going to ask the facilitator what went well and what they would have done differently. From
the conversation with the counselor I am going to revise the outline I created of that group
agenda.
A second skill I want to improve on is in managing clear & appropriate boundaries with
clients category. Specifically, knowing when not to disclose my personal information and to not
do things for clients when they can do them themselves. I have a lot in common with the clients
at my site, having been in similar situations as most of them. My site supervisor has mentioned
that sometimes my boundaries with clients are unclear. I was not sure what she meant until she
had me keep a journal of times I have or wanted to self-disclose. This past week she
recommended a chapter from Boundary Issues in Counseling. Now each week we are going to
review my journal and a corresponding chapter from Boundary Issues in Counseling. I will also
be sharing in class some of my lessons learned and growth in improving boundaries with clients.
A third skill I want to improve is in my self-reflection regarding clinical practice
category. Often, after a session with a client I think that I have missed empathetic moments
because of being in my head thinking of what I should do versus being with the client. This is
highlighted when my site supervisor asks me after a session what I was feeling at the time when
a client says something particular. Most times my response to her is a thought, not a feeling. I
have begun the workbook, Self-Practice/Self-Reflection Guide for Psychotherapists, to guide my
self-reflection of clinical practice. Each week I will be reviewing it with my site supervisor and
each week I will sharing in class what I am learning about my clinical practice.

When I look back to walking into practicum eight weeks ago I was nervous and excited.
I did not think that I would be providing counseling to clients so quickly. I might have thought
that applying everything from my coursework would go as smoothly as in the textbooks and in
class. What I have learned so far is the coursework is the foundation of everything I do with
clients. As I reflect on my meeting with Dr Rice to review my midterm evaluation, I am
appreciative to have feedback from the 8 competencies. However, the categories of group
counseling interventions an and self-reflection regarding clinical practice gave me greater
feedback and specific information.
