Psy 102 or 105 or equivalent, junior status

Relationship of course to degree program:

Psy 303 is one of the elective courses for the major in psychology and other social service disciplines like human resources, social work, addictions counseling, and pastoral counseling.

IV. Required text and/or materials:

Nugent, F. & Jones, K. (2009). Introduction to the Profession of Counseling. 5th Edition

(2009). ISBN-13: 978-0-13-514430-5.

V. Course Description:

An introduction to the theories and practices of contemporary individual, marriage, academic, group, and vocational counseling. Emphasis is placed on facilitative responses, listening and other helping skills, psychology, and applied psychology.

VI. Principal Instructional Techniques:

This course will be presented using a modular course format. Activities will include weekly

chats, multimedia materials, and writing assessments designed to assess mastery learning

toward the subject area.

VII. Course Requirements:

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS: The Learning Management System (LMS) for this course is Moodle. Your computer must be compatible with Moodle requirements. Please use Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat to complete the readings and assignments. Additional materials will be posted on Moodle and/or sent through Brescia email, utilizing various media forms, including video and audio resources. We believe that in our BU Online program synchronous chats are an outstanding way to create and maintain community among peers and with faculty. However, we recognize that it is not always possible with varied work schedules and obligations for all students to participate in synchronous chat. Since we believe the weekly hour’s chat time is a ‘value-added’ bonus that facilitates student learning for many, we want to continue that process, but for students unable to attend we’re also committed to make the benefits available via recordings and asynchronous chat discussion questions each week. Please see the rest of the syllabus for the specifics of how our weekly ‘chat’ will be held. At the end of the mod, you will have an opportunity to do a special evaluation to get feedback on this revised policy for synchronous chat as part of BU Online.”

TEXTBOOK READING ASSIGNMENTS: Completing weekly reading assignments are important. I will be supplementing each weekly reading assignment with a lecture and powerpoint presentation. The lectures will be a part of our online chat discussions each week. The lectures are not intended to replace your textbook readings but rather to supplement the text readings in a way it presents key highlights and real-world applications for your better understanding of the material and content. GRADED ASSIGNMENTS: These written assignments (8) will specifically focus on content and material that will normally serve as a study guide for quizzes.

ONLINE PARTICIPATION to DISCUSSION BOARDS: Each week I will be posting discussion questions/starters on Sunday evenings from the required readings on the DISCUSSION BOARD. To earn Discussion Board points, you must make at least three (3) substantial responses each week (to each starter), one (1) substantial response to each discussion board starter AND two (2) substantial responses to other students’ responses. Points will be awarded based on one (1) response to each discussion starter/activity and each response to other students’ (2) comments/responses. I believe you will find participating in the Discussion Board learning activities to be very important to your learning outcomes. Visiting “the discussions” frequently, at least every other day, is highly recommended.

COMPREHENSIVE ASSIGNMENT: This Assignment will be your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about psychology.The instructions begin in Lesson #1 with other directives in each

session. Any questions or problems should be addressed with the instructor as soon as

possible.Stay tuned, I will be providing a little more specific detail and instructions about this very exciting and important assignment after mid-term along with a grading rubric.

QUIZZES: You will be tested over each week’s reading materials and content. The quizzes will normally consist of 10-20 questions each week and will have a 45-minute time limit to complete. Quizzes will remain open for two days. Quizzes will open on Friday mornings no later than 10:00 A.M. and close Sunday at 11:59 P.M. CST.

supplement knowledge of content and written assignments, I can also see and access the same borrowed

XI. Other Course Policies:

Late assignments:

Late assignment and exams will not be accepted except in cases of emergency situations. In case of an

unexpected circumstance or emergency, the student is responsible for contacting the instructor before the

deadline (when possible) to get consideration to arrange a new due date. Late assignments and/or exams will

not be accepted for grading and receive a zero grade unless the instructor is notified of the circumstance

causing the lateness and agrees to grant an extension. All assignments and exams granted extensions will

receive an automatic reduction of 25%. The penalty is to encourage you to stay on track without falling

behind, and to be fair to students who are timely. Please note that make up exams will consist entirely of essay

questions.

Online classroom conduct:

The classroom should be an environment conducive to learning and collaboration among peers to assist in favorable learning outcomes. Courteous and respectful behavior is expected by all. Anything else will not be tolerated. Please use appropriate language, grammar, and pragmatics when communicating online and during chat sessions with others. Refrain from using ALL CAPS-THIS IS SHOUTING!
