Discussion Rubric
COU 510 Week Seven Small Group Discussion Rubric
Small group discussions in this course allow you to develop deeper connections with a smaller segment of the class. These small group discussions are an opportunity for you to create a sense of community within the course. They are also a great opportunity to get to know your peers and make professional
connections. Your active participation in these small group discussion forums is essential to your overall success this term. Discussions will utilize video within the YouSeeU tools, which gives you practical experience interacting in a face-to-face manner with the benefit of an asynchronous environment.
Discussion questions are designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your openness to new ideas and to practice how to respond when you do
not agree. It is important for counselors to develop this nonjudgmental disposition and to build a culture that appreciates differences. Prompt: Once you have read this week’s resources, pick one of the following case illustrations:
Case Illustration 11.1 Balancing Life, Family, and Work
Case Illustration 11.2 Career Changes Case Illustration 11.3 A Call for Renewal or Crisis
First identify what case illustration you chose, and then answer the following questions: What are the top issues that need to be addressed while working with this client? What theory would you use to explain your approach to working with this
client?
In this discussion, use the Shapiro Library research guide to find scholarly research to support your response.
When responding to your peers, address any cultural or ethical elements that may need to be addressed. Requirements for Small Group Discussion Board Assignments Students are required to post one initial video and to follow up with at least two written responses for each discussion.
For your initial video (1), you must do the following:
Compose a substantive video response. Complete the initial video by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. of your local time zone.
Take into consideration material such as course content and other discussion forums from the current week and previous weeks, when appropriate.
Reference scholarly or peer-reviewed sources to support your discussion points, as appropriate (using proper citation methods for your discipline, referencing authors as you create your video. For example, Smith found that X influenced Y.) .

Demonstrate more depth and thought than simply stating “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in each discussion prompt.
