Throughout our country’s history, technology and culture have impacted the development of careers. In the 1800s, the new technology of factory equipment shifted the agricultural-based economy towards one focused on manufacturing (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017) With the new technology of cars, there were needs for manufacturing workers, sales teams for sell the new concept of cars, and mechanics to help maintain the cars were functioning properly. Throughout history, anytime a new technology enters the economy, new career opportunities enter as well. As technology continues to grow and develop so will the job market and careers.

One can also see the cultural changes in the workplace throughout history such as women and minorities in entering the workforce. Women are now make up almost half of the working individual in countries with stronger economies (De Jonge, 2018). This was not something that was always possible. My grandmother always tells me about how she was raised to stay home and be a mother yet she always wanted to go to college and teach. Eventually, she did go back to school after she had my mom and uncles. She is constantly reminding me how luck I am to be in an environment where women can do whatever they want. Currently, I feel that our country has come a long way with women and minorities in the workplace but there is still room for education and growth. Unfortunately, some fields like engineering, are dominated by men. This could be traced back to young girls not being encouraged as often to pursue science and math careers when they are young in elementary school. My sister is a teacher and she tries to encourage her young students to pursue whatever they are talented at and enjoy.

Good evening Dr. Walker and class,

In the late 1800’s there was a major shift from an agriculture based workforce to an industrial and manufacturing workforce, which forced American workers to relocate for better work opportunities. The early 20th century is when the emphasis was put on helping individuals choose the best occupation for them. In the 1920’s the focus turned towards providing job placement services where individuals could find help with occupational and vocational options, and were provided help by use of such tools assessments and aptitude test.

Frank Parsons made a major impact on the way career development services were provided. Parsons designed a systematic approach to occupational decision making which he called his concept “true reasoning” which was originally designed to help younger generations choose a suitable vocation. This systematic approach was based on a set of principles which established a foundation of techniques to help young individuals choose a vocation.

The workforce and job market has changed a lot over the past decade with high levels of unemployment in the states and internationally. Corporations are downsizing, its becoming more and more difficult to find a reliable and financially secure job. And on the other hand the job market is being flooded with job seekers and individuals trying to advance in their careers, or just hang on the job they have. Career counseling and career development services are in high demand. With these factors in mind, career counselors, and career development professionals will need to have a good understanding of what a client needs to advance in their career, and gone are the days of the one size fits all, cookie cutter services of the 20th century. This job market is a faster paced, higher educated, multiskilled, multi-cultured, and highly diverse career enthusiast.
