Getting Started

An effectively-formatted resume is concise and uses a consistent style throughout the entire document, making it easy to read.

· Choose a 11-12 point font that is professional and legible such as Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Verdana or Tahoma.

· Use the same font and font size throughout your entire resume. However, to emphasize your name at the top of your document you may choose to make it a larger font size.

· Selectively format your text using bold, italics, or underline to draw attention to key information in your resume. Use styles consistently throughout your entire resume. For example, if you bold one of your job titles continue using bold on job titles throughout the document.

· Avoid the use of color or graphics. Traditional resume styles are preferred for most fields.

· Set up your page margins at .75 to 1.25 inches on all sides.

· Use single spacing throughout, with a blank line between each section of content.

· Use bullet points instead of paragraphs of text when describing your accomplishments in your experience sections.

· Avoid using resume templates, as they can be difficult to navigate and often include hidden tables and code. By creating your document from scratch, your resume will look unique and help you stand out in your job search.

· Mirror your resume format across other application documents, such as your cover letter and reference sheet.
