communicating

All counselors develop a unique style of communicating with a client. Some are very direct and to the point, some are more quiet and reflective, some are very active—engaging in exercises, role plays, and goal setting. The purpose of this assignment is to help you identify your counseling style at the time of entering this course. Whether you’re an experienced counselor, or have counseled others informally, or have never had the occasion to develop counseling skills, your objective in this assignment is to simply observe yourself interacting with a client.By participating in a practice session with a volunteer client athlete and transcribing this session, you will be able to observe and experience your style and reflect on your strengths and areas for development. You can also ask your volunteer to provide some feedback on your skills. For this assignment, complete the following tasks:Contact the athlete willing to role play a concern or situation for which consulting a sport psychologist might be advisable. Please note that you will do three separate interviews with this client athlete. Conduct one interview now, one in Module 4, and another interview in Module 6 of this course.Remind the client athlete to follow the provided scenario and emphasize that this is not a true counseling situation. Encourage the client athlete to reveal thoughts and feelings appropriate to the role during the role play.Relax and transcribe the session, conducting 15 minutes of an intake session with this client athlete about the concerns stated in the scenario.Thank the client athlete for help in this assignment.Review your performance from your notes and your client’s feedback.Note: Do not conduct a true interview with a real person seeking your help even if you have access to one. It’s critical that you don’t misrepresent yourself as a licensed counselor.Complete your interview and submit your notes and your clients notes along with a one to two page summary of the process in a Word document to the submit it by the due date assigned to the Submissions Area.Note: This assignment in not graded at this time.
