I

Assignment – Part 1:

(Be sure to give a clear name for your topic on top of your answers.

Before Writing – Choose your topic.

Choosing a good topic that is limited enough and that you can apply is an important step towards getting a good grade.

Choose one specific topic that interested you from Chapters 23, 24, or 25.

First – Topic Breadth: Limit your discussion to only one specific topic or theory. This topic must be an important topic and not simply an example or story. Limit your discussion to one specific topic that can be reviewed well and in some detail in 400-500 words. Many students in the past had very broad topics. If your topic is too broad, you will not be able to cover it well and your answers to Q2 and Q3 will be too general and often obvious.

The following are some examples:

Chapter 23

Senescence is too boad; decline in vision is limited enough.

Chapter 24

– Decline in brain functions is too broad; multitasking is limited enough.

– Memory change is too broad: Short term and working memory is limited enough.

Chapter 25:

– Do NOT cover all three theories of late adulthood. Choose only one.

In general, you should never cover more than one theory.

– On the other hand, changes in driving is just an applied example (Chapter 23). The main concept is “selective optimization with compensation.” So, you should not choose your topic only based on the length of the section in the textbook. You should choose the main theory or concept of focus. Here, driving is given as an example to explain the concept of “selective optimization with compensation.” You do not need to review all examples given in the textbook. You need to explain the main concept and give more than one example to explain it. If you do choose this topic, I suggest that you give an advice in question 2 about another issue (not driving or sex).

Second : Topic Applicability: Before choosing your topic, be sure that you can come up with a good answer for questions 2 and 3. Do not choose a topic that you cannot relate to or one that is difficult to apply to human development. Generally it is easier to find an original application if your topic is a theory. If your topic is already applied, the applications are mostly already discussed in the book.

Writing the Assignment

Please write the specific name of your topic on top

Answer the following questions

Please include the questions and write your answers separately below each question.

1. Overview the topic and define relevant terms in your own words. Your topic should include a theory or research. You need to clearly demonstrate that you fully understand the topic. Do not over rely on quotes. Do NOT give a list of term and definitions. Incorporate the terms and their definitions into your essay. This part should be at least 300 words long. This part should be primarily based on the material discussed in your textbook.

2. Discuss how information from the topic can help the elderely today. You can for example suggest specific advice for the government, nursing homes, or the media. You cannot provide suggestions for future research. Your advice should be regarding how we can use the information that we already have today. Your answer and application should be original, creative, and specific. In the past, students lost a lot of points on this part. Do not give advice that can be considered obvious or simply based on common sense. For example, do not just say that adult children should pay more attention to their elderly parents. Do not just state that the government should give more money for elderly care centers. You may, however, come up with original ideas regarding how to use the funds.

Of course, you may not copy any advice or information from a website or any other source.

Note that this is a different question from question 1 above or 3 below. Do not repeat any information from the textbook. Do not discuss information from your own life for question 2. The application should focus only on Late Adulthood. (200 words).

Based on previous students’ assignments, I came up with the following notes.

NOTE… Remember that you cannot suggest future research. So, your advice cannot be that psychologists/ doctors should learn more about….

NOTE.. Your advice must clearly relate and you must clearly connect it with your exact topic. For example, if your topic is on short term memory/ working memory, your advice cannot be about studying information that will be stored in long term memory or information that is much beyond the capacity of short term/ working me,ory.

NOTE… It is very important that you understand your topic very well before you can offer advice. Some technical topics especially anything relationship to the brain or comp,ex biological functions require that you have more expertise o the topic before you can offer advice. You might want to skip these topics.

NOTE … If we do not have a cure or treatment for a disease, it will be difficult to come up with advice regarding it. On the other hand, if there is a treatment, it is probably already given in the book

The following advice is NOT acceptable. They are too obvious and not original or creative

Exercise

Good nutrition

We should teach, inform, create a pamphlet, or show videos about the topic.

3. Explain how the topic applies to elderly people that you personally know.

Be sure that your answers to questions 2 and 3 apply to the exact topic that you discussed in question 1, and that they focus on the same lifespan period (late adulthood).

Remember that you are NOT allowed to use internet sites or other outside sources besides the textbook.
