basic skills

In addition to the ability to listen well to clients, some other basic skills you need when attending to clients are encouraging, paraphrasing, and summarizing. In this assignment, you will apply these skills to specific scenarios. This will help you differentiate between skills and the circumstances in which you should use them.In the actual counseling situation, you will need to attend to both the words of your client and nonverbal expressions, tone of voice, posture, and more to respond effectively. You will have less time to come up with paraphrasing, encouraging, and summarizing. It helps to see what you can come up with outside the actual session first. Further in this module, you’ll have the opportunity to practice with your volunteer. For each of the following fictitious client comments, provide your response using encouraging, paraphrasing, or summarizing. Use exact quotes in your responses.“I think the coach was way out of line reducing my playing time, but maybe I need to just let it go.” (Use encouraging.) “I have tried everything I know how to improve my free throws, but I cannot shoot better than 30 percent from the line. I hate it that the other team always fouls me, thinking that I have a pretty good chance of missing the shot. It’s embarrassing.” (Use paraphrasing.)“I just don’t know what I’ll do. I’ve been to physical therapy for three weeks now, and I see some improvement, but I still can’t pitch with any power at all. The test report was inconclusive. Whatever it is that is making my shoulder weak is way down in the joint and is not showing up in the tests. The season is almost over, and I need to be strong. My doctor says I should probably look for surgery if physical therapy doesn’t help. I don’t know whether to push for the short-term gain for my team or conserve for the long-term health of my arm. It’s an overwhelming set of choices.” (Use summarizing.)In addition, note any challenges you faced in completing this assignment.Create a one- to two-page response in the following sequence:Copy and paste the fictitious client comments as they appear here.Below each client comment, type your response in quotation marks. Your response should be as clear and as concise as possible without compromising on the required communication style. Then explain the challenges you faced and how you might prepare yourself for your practice opportunity coming up.Submit your response to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned.Through the end of the module, comment on the responses of two of your peers, suggesting improvements to refine their responses. In your responses, use a diplomatic and thoughtful tone encouraging to your peers.
