Good Morning Class on this blustery, snowy day,

For this forum, the first thing I thought of when it comes to interviewing a professional in the field was to not as the obvious; and by obvious, I mean questions such as, “why did you choose psychology?” “have you always wanted to be a psychologist?” “if you did not major in psychology, what else would you do?” and other vague questions as such. I want to ask thought provoking questions, challenge questions, questions that are not real common that dig deep and bring out the true soul of an individual. It is nice to inquire about one’s experience within the field, but I want to seek the truth of a professional in the field. The following questions are what came to my mind:

What assessments are you most comfortable and familiar with?

What grade level of student are you most comfortable assessing?

What are the credentials needed to obtain your position?

What are your weaknesses and strengths as a professional?

How do you deal with conflict between staff, clientele and your opinion?

What did you learn from [insert specific research experience]?

How do you handle stress?

How did your opinion of psychology evolve?

Did you find your interests shifting?

Do you like learning about personality traits or why people behave in a particular way?

Do you enjoy learning about the interventions or therapeutic techniques that improve people’s lives?

Do you enjoy the biological or medical aspects of psychology?

What are the top five skills you have acquired through your psychology major?

What traits/characteristics did it take to be a good psychology major?

Where have you excelled and struggled in your major/field?

What has come naturally for you?

Are you interested in related fields such as counseling or social work or organizational behavior?

What parts of your major have you not enjoyed?

Would you combine your knowledge of psychology with another field?

Would you hone in on a specific area like positive psychology or the criminal mindset?

Also, below are some links that are relatable articles with this forum and helped to inspire me to think outside the box.

Greetings!

Obviously, in any interview, one wants to get a bit of background information on the interviewee in order to be able to tailor questions to the specific person and to make the most out of the interview itself. Thus, I would begin with the following as my opening questions:

1. What is your name?

2. What is your quest?

3. What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Having the answers to these simple questions would give one a good baseline and lend to a most effective interview.

Ok, Monty Python references aside, I have prepared several questions for a professional that I think would help me on my own quest to becoming a clinical psychologist focusing on family care.

1. How long ago did you receive your education?

2. What was your undergraduate major?

3. What, if any, was your Master’s/Doctorate level major?

4. If you had to go back to the beginning of your education with the goal of making it to where you are today, what would stay the same and what would change regarding your educational and career choices?

5. Are you at the place you envisioned when you started your educational journey? If not, how does your reality differ from your vision and what you do differently?

6. What was your motivation for the education and career paths you chose?

7. What is your favorite part of the profession you are in?

8. What is your least favorite part of the profession you are in?

9. Do you find that by working in the field of Psychology that your personal relationships are the same or different? If different, how so?

10. Do you find that you are working a similar schedule to what you expected? If not, are you working less or more?

11. What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of your profession? Least rewarding?

12. Do you find that it is easy or difficult to maintain personal relationships with colleagues?

13. How has your profession affected the way you live your daily life?

14. Do you find that opportunities for employment/advancement are ample in your field?

That is the start that I have. As my four-year-old has kept us awake for most of the last few nights, my brain is pretty much fried and I keep coming back to the same types of questions I already have, just using different words to ask them. Please be honest with your feedback and I hope you enjoy!

-Mike
